Already lauded for encouraging its 66,000 vendors to reduce packaging, Walmart has created Sustainable Value Networks—global networks which bring together Walmart personnel with suppliers, members of academia, governments and NGO’s to drive initiatives that tackle other key environmental and social issues. So far, SVN’s have launched initiatives that address fleet efficiency, factory energy efficiency, factory safety, sourcing from women-owned businesses, use of chemicals, sustainable seafood harvesting, and product reformulation of Walmart private-label and many national brands. By placing its considerable influence as the world’s largest retailer behind a variety of social and environmental causes, Walmart is making a difference.
