Does the very thought of having to create engaging content for your website give you cold sweats? Or do you think you’re a fabulous content writer but can’t figure out why no one is reading your blog? You’re not a failure. You’re just not following an effective process. Take this advice and your content will never be the same.
Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock, you’ve heard a marketer somewhere bark, “Content is king.” Why do we need to create great content? Because it works. Great content helps you rank better in Google. Great content attracts your target audience to your website. Great content engages your users and gets them to buy what you’re selling.
Creating content feels like a homework assignment. A long, tedious, grueling homework assignment that you don’t want to do and find every reason in the world to avoid. For many businesses they’ve heard their marketing agency or department harp on them to create great content. But for whatever reason they just don’t do it, and then wonder why their website isn’t generating leads or sales. Most of us fall into one of two categories:
1) The doubter. Have you ever said this? “I’m not a writer.” or “I sucked at writing papers in college. Why would I ever attempt to create a blog?”
2) The aspiring novelist. Do you tell yourself this: “OMG I’m so eloquent. My blogs are #amaze!” You think you’re brilliant but can’t figure out why no one else sees what you see.
It’s ok, we’ve all been there one time or another. Let go of that. It’s time to get real and flex those writing muscles.
You can’t avoid the task of creating stellar content one more minute. Do your business a favor and get the book “Everybody Writes” by Ann Handley. Ann recently was a guest speaker at a Cincinnati AMA event and as always, she did not disappoint. No surprise that she really knows how to deliver great content, both online and in real life. In Ann’s book she shared a 12 step process for writing a blog post or article. Check it out:
At the AMA event, Red212 facilitated a workshop based on Ann’s book and what happened was quite magical. Attendees were armed with seed content including general health facts about the muscular system, strength training, nutrition, etc. Attendees worked through the 12 steps above to create a unique piece of content using the facts provided. Some of them were even brave enough to share their work with us! Every single piece of content was completely unique, despite the fact that they were given the same topic to write about. This is proof that if you follow a proven process, anyone can create great content.
We’d like to share some of the content pieces that were shared with us. Notice how different and unique each piece is. This should give you the confidence to know that either you can create great content yourself, or know how to hire the right team or agency to get the job done.
Note how the title of this piece really catches your attention.
Another catchy title! Love it! We also love how they got right to the point of what they want us to do as a reader – sign up for the program. Nice work! I’m in!
Bonus points here because, well, “desk potato.” Brilliant. Extra point for the little drawing at the top. Each of us has our own style. Let it shine!
We were all touched and inspired by this one. Well done!
Great example showing the process in motion.
There were far too many great content pieces to share in one blog post, so the rest of them can be found here.
If you’re feeling more confident about your writing, share a link to your blog post in the comments below. Or if you are ready to hire a team, we would love the opportunity to work with you! Reach out and Say Hi!
